Inheritance and overrides

How a location or a menu replaces a value it gets from the organization, and which value a guest sees.

Your organization sets everything once: the catalogue, and the settings every location starts from. A location or a menu can replace any single value with its own — an override — and inherits everything else. Nothing is copied, so a change you make for the organization reaches every place that has not overridden it.

Which value a guest sees

Three levels

  • The organization holds the catalogue — dishes and add-ons with their names, photos and prices — and the settings under Settings.
  • A location can override them for one venue. Its override applies in every menu the location serves.
  • A menu can override them wherever it is served. Its override applies at every location that serves the menu.

Which value a guest sees

For each value, a guest sees the closest one that is set: the menu's first, then the location's, then the organization's. When a location and a menu both change the same value, the menu wins.

Each value is decided on its own. A location can change a dish's price and still show the catalogue's name and photo, and a menu can rename the dish and still use that location's price.

For example, a lemonade sits on both the Dinner and the Drinks menu, and both menus are served at Old Town and at Harbor:

Where the guest ordersPriceWhy
Old Town · Dinner$4.00The catalogue price
Harbor · Dinner$4.50Harbor changed the price
Harbor · Drinks$3.50The Drinks menu changed it, and a menu wins
Old Town · Drinks$3.50The Drinks menu's price applies wherever it is served

An override stays until you remove it. Change the lemonade's price in the catalogue, and Old Town's Dinner menu follows; Harbor and the Drinks menu keep their own prices.

Reading an inherited or an overridden value

Settings

On a location's Settings and Ordering tabs, each setting switches between Inherited and Overridden.

  1. An inherited setting shows the value the location gets from the organization today, and follows it when the organization changes.
  2. Switched to Overridden, the setting is highlighted and holds the location's own value, which stays when the organization changes.

Reset to inherited under an overridden setting goes back to the organization's value.

Dishes and add-ons

A location's Overrides tab and a menu's Dish changes tab list your dishes and add-ons, each marked with what changes there: Inherited when nothing does, or the change itself, such as Price overridden. In a dish's override, a field left empty or set to Inherit keeps the catalogue's value, and Remove override brings the whole dish back to it.

From the dish's side, its Placements tab lists every menu and location that shows it, and which of them change it. How to set each override: Change dishes at one location and Change dishes in one menu.

Names in one menu

In the menu builder, a group or a category renamed for that menu is marked In this menu. Reset to catalog name brings back the name from the catalogue; other menus keep it all along.
