Transfer ownership

Every organization has one owner; hand the role to another member when someone else should own the business.

Every organization has one Owner: whoever created it, until they hand it over. Only the owner can transfer ownership, and only to someone who is already a member.

What only the owner can do

The owner can do everything anyone else can, and some things nobody else can:

  • delete the organization, in SettingsDanger zone;
  • delete a location;
  • create, change and delete custom roles;
  • hand ownership to someone else.

The owner can't be removed from the team, and the Owner role is never given in an invitation or with Edit: it changes hands only as described here.

Before you start

  • The new owner is on the team. If they aren't yet, invite them with any role and wait until they join.
  • You can confirm it's you. You'll enter your password, or a code from your authenticator app if your account has two-factor authentication. An account that signs in only with Google signs in with Google again — see Confirm it's you.

Hand it over

  1. Find the new owner

    Open Team and find the person on the Members tab.

  2. Start the transfer

    Select Transfer ownership on their row. Only the owner sees this button.

  3. Confirm the transfer

    Read the dialog and select Transfer ownership.

  4. Confirm it's you

    In Confirm it's you, enter your password or authenticator code and select Confirm.

The person becomes the owner and keeps any roles they already had. You become an Admin and keep your other roles, so you can go on running the organization — but not the things only the owner does.

You can't take ownership back yourself: only the new owner can hand it to you again.

Owners and deleting an account

An owner whose organization still has other members can't delete their account until they hand ownership over. What happens to your organizations when you delete your account is on Delete your account.
