Build a menu

Arrange groups, categories and dishes in the menu builder, rename them for one menu, and save every change at once.

A menu is built in three levels: groups (Food, Drinks), categories inside a group (Starters, Mains) and dishes inside a category. Groups, categories and dishes all come from your catalogue, so the same dish can sit in several menus, in a different place in each.

Who can do this: Owner, Admin, Content manager, and Content editor

The builder

Open a menu from the Menus page. Its Structure tab is the builder; the guest preview beside it shows the saved menu as guests will see it, drafts included. The preview needs a wide screen; Hide preview folds it away.

  1. Search in menu… finds a dish, category or group in a long menu.
  2. Add group adds a group.
  3. Drag a handle to move a dish, category or group.
  4. Add item from catalog places a dish from your catalogue in this category.
  5. New item creates a new dish and places it here.

Add groups and categories

  1. Add a group

Click Add group. Pick a group from your catalogue, or type a name and choose to create a new one.

  2. Add categories to it

On the group's row, click Category and pick or create a category the same way.

A group or category you create here joins your catalogue, so other menus can use it too. Creating one needs a role that may create categories; without it you can only pick existing ones.

Add dishes

In a category, click Add item from catalog and pick dishes from your catalogue. To add a dish that does not exist yet, click New item: the item editor opens, and the dish joins your catalogue as soon as you create it there. Placing it in this category is one more change for the menu's save.

A dish's add-ons are chosen per menu, on the product's Add-ons tab — see Create add-ons and offer them with dishes.

Arrange the menu

  • Move a group, category or dish by dragging its handle. With the keyboard, focus the handle and press the up or down arrow.
  • Move a dish to another category, or a category to another group, with the move button on its row.
  • Remove a row with its delete button. A dish, category or group removed from the menu stays in your catalogue and in other menus.
  • Find with Search in menu…. Moving is turned off while the search filters the menu, so a partial order is never saved.

Rename for this menu only

Click a group's or category's name and type. The new name applies in this menu only, marked In this menu; other menus and the catalogue keep their name. To go back, open the mark and choose Reset to catalog name. Names in other languages work the same way — see Translate a menu.

A group can also have a photo, shown above it on this menu: click the picture on the group's row to upload one or pick one from your library. Like the name, the photo belongs to this menu only and is saved with your other changes.

Edit a dish

Click a dish's name to open the item editor. It edits the dish itself, so a change shows in every menu that has the dish, and it is saved with the editor's own Save changes. Names, prices, photos and dietary details are explained in Add a product. To change a dish only in this menu, use the Dish changes tab — see Change dishes for one menu.

Save your changes

Nothing you do in the builder is saved by itself. A bar at the bottom counts your changes: Save changes saves them all at once, Discard drops them. Unsaved changes stay while you switch tabs, and the dashboard asks before you leave the page. If a save fails, your changes stay on the page; save again.

On a published menu, saving publishes the changes straight away — see Publish a menu.
