Translate a menu
Which languages a menu is shown in, how to translate its names and dishes, and what guests see in each language.
On this page
One menu serves guests in several languages. You translate its text once, and each guest reads the menu in the language they pick.
Which languages a menu has
Your menus use your organization's languages, chosen under SettingsLocalization. One of them is the default: the menu opens in it for guests who have not picked another language, and any text you have not translated shows in it. Your plan sets how many languages your organization can use.
A location can offer its guests fewer of these languages and have a default of its own, on its Settings tab — see Change a location's settings.
Translate group and category names
Who can do this: Owner, Admin, Content manager, and Content editor
Pick the language
On the menu's page, pick the language in the switch beside History. It shows when your organization has more than one language, and decides which language you edit on every tab of the menu.
Type the names
Click a group's or category's name and type it in that language. A name not translated yet shows the default language's name in grey, as a hint.
Save
Click Save changes.
- The language you edit: here, Russian.
Like any name you type in the builder, a translation made there belongs to this menu only — see Rename for this menu only.
Translate dishes
A dish's name and descriptions belong to the dish, so you translate them once for every menu. Click the dish's name in the builder — or open it under Products — and in the item editor pick the language in Content locale, or use Edit all languages at once to fill in every language side by side. See Add a product.
The other texts of a menu are translated where you write them: the words of a promo banner with Language of the words in the banner editor, and the menu's search and sharing texts on its SEO & sharing tab.
What guests see
When a location offers more than one language, the guest menu has a language button. A guest's choice is remembered for your venue on their phone. Anything you have not translated shows in the default language, so a guest never sees an empty name.
A printed menu is in one language you choose for each print — see Print a menu.
